The 17-Hydroxyprogesterone (17-OHP) Test measures blood levels of 17-hydroxyprogesterone, a steroid hormone produced by the adrenal glands and gonads during the synthesis of cortisol and sex hormones. Abnormal 17-OHP levels may indicate disorders of adrenal hormone production, most commonly congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH), as well as certain adrenal or ovarian conditions. This test is commonly used to evaluate symptoms such as irregular menstrual cycles, infertility, excessive hair growth, acne, ambiguous genitalia, or early puberty, and to investigate adrenal dysfunction. Results provide valuable insight into adrenal and reproductive hormone pathways and help support the diagnosis and monitoring of endocrine disorders.
