TNFα is one of the primary inflammatory cytokines in the body. It is normally produced in response to infection, but is also triggered during autoimmune disease, cancer, and obesity. It can directly induce insulin resistance, worsen mitochondrial function and kill cells.

While inflammation is imperative for resisting infections and overcoming tissue damage, it should be resolved quickly thereafter. Inflammation can drive the stress systems, contribute to oxidative stress and impair metabolism, and thus plays a key role in various health issues if chronically activated.
