Folate (vitamin B9) plays a critical role in methylation, which is needed for neurotransmitter production, DNA synthesis, preventing anemia and metabolizing homocysteine. This test measures folate in the cell free portion of the blood (serum). Anemia due to a lack of folate is classically associated with fatigue, weakness and brain fog.
