The Organic Acids test measures the amount of various intermediates in metabolism in the urine. This approach is typically used clinically to diagnose inborn (genetic) errors of metabolism, issues with various metabolic pathways due to the inherited malfunctioning of certain enzymes. However, it can be broadly used to characterized a number of bottlenecks in metabolism, caused by genes or the environment, that can result in any number of symptoms including fatigue and brain fog, poor gut health and a low metabolism.
The types of these organic acids include:
✧ Byproducts / intermediates of branched chain amino acid metabolism: these are the most abundant and common. Elevated levels suggest you have a problem in breaking down these amino acids for energy.
✧ Byproducts / intermediates of tyrosine or phenylalanine metabolism: also very abundant and common. Elevated levels suggest you have a problem in breaking down these amino acids for energy.
✧ Byproducts / intermediates of fatty acid metabolism: High levels mean you have an issue breaking down fat for energy.
✧ Intermediates of energy metabolism: especially important. This is where the breakdown of all food converges. If you have high levels of any of these, then you have a “backup” in your energy production.
✧ Bacterial / fungal metabolites: you might have an infection or overgrowth if you see these.
✧ Byproducts of sulfur metabolism: you could have an issue with sulfur metabolism.
